A New Familiar
A New Familiar explores how an existing coastal home can be fundamentally transformed through careful reuse rather than wholesale demolition.
Located in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, the project involved major alterations and additions to an existing home, retaining much of its original structure while completely reconsidering the way it is occupied. Previously external and underutilised areas were reclaimed and incorporated into the footprint, while the internal planning was substantially reorganised to improve circulation, functionality and the relationship between spaces.
Although much of the original building skeleton remains, the home has been comprehensively transformed. Externally, a reworking of its form, material palette and detailing establishes a new architectural identity: contemporary and relaxed, with a character that responds naturally to its beachside setting.
The result is a home that demonstrates the potential of transformation through reuse; retaining what was valuable while creating an entirely new experience within the existing framework.
